When it's Time to Replace or Repair Your Roof

Picture
When your roof is in trouble, so are you. Your roof protects your home, or business from the elements including water, harmful UV rays, and the local wildlife such as bats from taking root in your building’s attic. So when your roof is damaged or needs to be replaced, it is something you shouldn’t put off acting on as quickly as you can afford to. Once your roof becomes susceptible to the elements it can cause even more costly damage to your investments, including structures themselves to develop dry rot which can be very expensive and extensive to restore.

If you know or suspect you have a roofing problem the first place you want to start is with a roofing contractor who can tell you exactly what type of damage repair or total replacement cost you are facing.

If you’re ready to replace your roof take into consideration several factors about the type of roof you want to replace it with. Metal roofs are incredibly cost effective and economically friendly for several reasons. One major appeal to metal roofs is the fact that they can be put on quickly by a roofing contractor. The old roof doesn’t need to be ripped out and put in a landfill because a metal roof can go very effectively right on top of your old roof, regardless of the condition your old roof is in. This means less money to spend on a roofing contractor to rip the old roof out and less money to have your old roof sitting in a landfill for twenty years. It is also more ecologically friendly because your old roof isn’t adding to the growing pile of garbage we create as a nation.

If you prefer to stay with a more traditional residential roofing material consider all of your material options with your roofing contractor. You should strive for a material that is going to be as energy efficient as possible and at the same time find a material that will stand up to the climate demands of your particular area. Your roofing contractor should be able to help guide you towards what works and what doesn’t last well in your area to ensure your roof replacement won’t be an annual event.

Before you hire any contractor make sure you have a written bid and a written contract. You want to see in writing exactly what part of your money is going for materials and what is being allotted for labor. You also want to make sure your contract includes a start date and an estimated completion date. Weather, material supply delays and other unforeseen events can alter even the best contractor’s ability to meet a strict deadline. However it is not unrealistic to expect your actual end date to be within a few days of your agreed upon end date and to have a built in penalty fee if your job isn’t done on time.

Roof Contractor Safety

Picture
While all construction jobs are dangerous, a roof contractor faces more safety risks than others. The nature of their work requires them to often stand or squat on high slanted rooftops. Most injuries and deaths associated with construction work occur in the roofing profession. This type of work is considered the most dangerous of all construction trades. When you hire a professional to fix a leak or re-shingle your roof, you may want to pay close attention to the safety regulations that he or she follows. There are specific guidelines set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for most industries. However, this governmental agency does not publish safety manuals for any of those industries.

One reason that OSHA does not publish safety manuals is that there is no specific set of guidelines that will work for all people in an industry. The safety rules that one roof contractor follows may not work for another contractor. These professionals have some leeway to decide on their own safety rules, as long as they meet the standards set forth by OSHA. Those standards state that roofers must be protected from falls by guardrails, nets, or safety harnesses whenever they are working six feet or more above the ground. There are also standards regarding the use of scaffolding and ladders intended to keep workers safe.

These safety standards should be adhered to by every roof contractor, but sadly that is not always the case. To ensure the work on your roof is completed safely and without any injuries, you can ask to see your contractor's safety manual. Check to see that safety harnesses are used appropriately and that there are regulations for the use of ladders and scaffolding. Even if the contractor has insurance, he or she should also still protect workers with certain safety standards. You may not be financially liable for any injuries, but you still probably would not like to see anyone get hurt while fixing your roof. Once you have seen the roof contractor's safety manual, you will be able to notice if any workers are not following safety rules. You may be able to prevent a serious accident by being aware of those safety rules. One of the biggest reasons for roofing accidents is mistakes that workers make.

Whether intentional or unintentional, some workers may not follow safety standards. Some might even insist that they do not need to wear personal safety harnesses or adhere to other standards. This type of overconfidence can cause a serious accident. If your contractor is not always on site, some workers may take advantage of his or her absence by ignoring safety rules. Your knowledge of safety standards can help the contractor be sure work is being conducted properly while he or she is not there. If your roof is especially steep or very high, an accident could be very serious. Even the work zone on the ground can be dangerous if certain safety standards are not met. You can check to make sure that debris from the job is swept up regularly, so that workers are not at risk of stepping on sharp objects while on the ground. Your attention to the safety of workers at your home can help prevent an accident and ensure that regulations are met at all times.

The 5 Top Materials For Metal Roof

Picture
The types of materials available for roofs of metals
There are several types of metal roofing available. Depending on the requirements a choice can be made. There are so many materials available for metal roof. All of them bring a mixture of longevity, strength and flexibility. So, let’s check out what are these types.
Zinc for metal roof
It is one of those metals of metal roofing which have the quality to convert into utilizable materials. Architectural zinc is 100% recyclable and it lowers the use of energy in further manufacturing. Zinc hydroxyl-carbonate is a protective layer which is developed by the Zinc. This layer blocks the chemicals and moisture penetration. In case this layer is pierced, then the hydroxyl-carbonate will modify over time and make the zinc corrosion resistant naturally. When the flexibility, versatility and malleability of zinc combined with this factor, it becomes the material of choice.
Tin
Another material is tin which is also known as the Terne or Terneplate. It is one of those metals which has flexible character and is treated with the coating of tin and lead. If it is installed properly, then it will last up to 50 years.
Aluminum
This is the material which is increasingly becoming popular these days. Since it is corrosion resistant and requires minimum maintenance people started adopting it more. It is a better heat reflector than steel. Thus, it keeps the house cooler. It can last for about 35 years. Those who live in hot areas can go for this metal.
Galvanized steel
It is a wonderful and an economic roofing material that lasts for more than 60 years. It is made up of alloyed steel with a shielding zinc coat. Also, it is exceedingly rust-resistant.
Copper
It is the material which lasts the most among all the other roofing materials. Still, you hardly found a house having a copper roof. It is so because it demands lots of maintenance and also tough to obtain. But, if you find it and ready to maintain it, then this is unbeatable.
These were some of the metals which are used in metal roof. Depending on the requirements and the area of living, it can be finalizing that which one would be the best for your house. Also note that the price of installing all of them is different from each other.

Select Your House Roofing Material Wisely

Picture
The roof of a house is the part that gives the house its impressiveness.  The structure, design and material give it, its elegance.  It is wise to check the roof periodically – after each season. If you are a resident in Dallas then your tension about your roof can be reduced to a great extent. You can simply call and contact roofing companies Dallas. They would not only check your roof from time to time but also take care if there is anything is required to be done.

There are many house roofing materials that are now used.   The most commonly used one is the asphalt shingles.  Depending on the grade and model of the shingles it may live up to its guarantee period of 10, 20 or 30 years.  But the warranty doesn’t include the labor errors made while erecting. For this it would be better to let it be decided by the people who would be working for roofing repair Dallas.

Widely used another house roofing material is roofing tiles. Roofing tiles are available in various colors, sizes and profiles.  The popular roofing tile is the Mexican tile or the Spanish tile.  The plus points of this roofing are the strength and insulating property of the tiles.  Though this type of roofing is proved to be reliable, it is expensive.  And if one wants security then one has to pay for it so, not much bigly an issue.

Now depending on the singles to be installed, this can be done in multiple ways. Installing roof shingles is a very easy process. Overlapping method of installing roof shingle is a very time consuming process in which roof installation is done using nail gun or screwing driving screws. This is followed by screwing or nailing shingles at place. Shingles of types like asphalt, aluminum and rubber use up this method, but if you are installing ceramic roofs then you may like using glue.

Wood shingles, Aluminum and other metals, Slate tiles etc are some other house roofing material.  These are not eco-friendly. But there are some roofing materials that are environment friendly.  They are the engineered rubber or plastic roofs. When selecting a roofing material some regions and countries insist on fire proof materials like asphalt shingles.

A comparative study of these different items of roofing materials will be an asset.  Asphalt shingles are inexpensive, easy to repair, fire resistant.  Asphalt shingle lasts 20 – 30 years.  Wood shingles/shakes are natural looking and longer lasting than asphalt shingles.  Not fully fire resistant.

Metal and aluminium sheets are light weight, durable, low maintenance.  It is environment friendly and can be installed on existing roofs.  Concrete tiles, clay tiles are available in many colors.  It is attractive, fire proof and easy to maintain.  But it is expensive, heavy as well as fragile.

Slate is the most expensive in this group of roofing.  But it has a distinctive, beautiful look.  It has long life span.  It requires specialized installation. All you need to do is to ask the people from roofing repair Dallas and leave everything with faith to them.

Metal roofs are a great option for some areas of the country, but one solution that is making waves is synthetic roofing. Synthetic roofing materials outlast and out perform their natural counterparts. They also come with 50 year warranties!

It really helped when you talked about galvanized steel. Like you said, it can last for up to 60 years and how economical it is. I guess I will be choosing this kind of material for the roof of our dream house. My husband and I don't really have that much cash to spare, so it would really be perfect for us to use materials that are affordable and that can last. We even have to apply for part-time jobs just to save money so that we can finally have a house of our own. So thanks a lot for the information!

That's good to know that your're shingles can last 10, 20, or 30 years but the warranty doesn't include any labor errors when it is installed so it'd be smart to let the company pick which roofing material to use. My roof right now is about 26 years old and it's starting to look shabby so I'm pretty sure we need to replace it. We'll have to find a good company and ask them what material would be best to use since they'll know the area and will know which material they can install the best so there are no mistakes and my warranty will still cover the roof.

I really liked that you recommended considering metal as your preferred roofing material of choice because I personally have multiple properties and all of them have steel/metal roofs. Installing them didn't cost much considering other roofing materials and they metal is as durable as ever.

Asphalt shingles is also great to use. Just a year ago I had my shingle roof reroofed due to storm damage and almost every single contractor I called recommended asphalt roofing material.

It sure was informative when you said roofing contractors have the riskiest jobs because they are required to stand on slanting roofs for an extended period of time. I guess I can agree with that since I tried fixing something in the roof once and nearly got myself injured. It should be more dangerous if the task is to replace the roof. I will let the professional do it for me. Hopefully, they are careful so that they do not get hurt.

An outermost exterior covering part of a building is known as roof. Roof is supported by the beneath layer of structure, Roofing materials commonly provide shelter from natural resources like sun heat and light, air, rain, animals and etc.Membrane roofing is in large sheets, generally fused in some way at the joints to form a continuous surface .Structural concrete can also be used for flat roof constructions.

I had no idea that metal roofing is economically friendly and cost-effective. A bunch of people have told me that asphalt roofs are better. But I trust you more than them because you gave actual reasons.

If the damage is extensive, it's usually a better idea and a better value to replace the entire roof. In terms of longevity, metal roofs are always a better and an attractive option.

Where we live there are a lot of metal roofs being put in due to the high chance for forest fires. Luckily we have been safe the last few years.

Thank you for explaining that asphalt shingles are easy to repair, inexpensive, and they're fire resistant. My friend just moved to an area that is more prone to wild fires. I think it's interesting that there are shingles that are more fire resistant than others that can work to keep your home safe.
